Stop Procrastinating And Just Do It!

Well, that might be easier said than done.  But let me tell you, as a former procrastinator, myself,
life is so much calmer when you do just "do it".

Way back when, in my younger days, and when I would procrastinate, I would say, "I may get it done at the last minute, but I always get it done."  And I did.

But as I learned better organizational skills and also how Universal Laws worked I changed.  I learned that you get what you put your dominant attention on.

It didn't take me long to realize that the most successful people get a lot done, don't procrastinate and also seem to have a lot of spare time.

That is when I decided I was going to just "do it" and get things done.  Handle them once and be done with it and then move on to something else or just relax.

What I found out was that thinking about doing something takes as much, if not more, energy than just doing it.

For example, you could just do those dishes after dinner and it would probably take 5 to 15 minutes.

That's right!  Only 5-15 minutes.

It is really amazing how little time most tasks people dread take.

We made a little unofficial study of it and timed doing some tasks like paying the bills, doing a load of laundry, cleaning up after a meal, etc. and found that most were less than 30 minutes and all were under an hour.

OR you can think about it for hours and unknowingly wear yourself out because you have now done the dishes (or any other task you keep putting off) hundreds of times in your mind.

No wonder people are so exhausted.  It is mentally exhausting to do something over and over again in your head and then the body gets exhausted, too.

If it needs to be done, just do it.  If it cannot be done, then let it go and do what can be done.

When you do small tasks to total completion right away, you will be amazed at how much easier it is.

It is also amazing how much more time you have and how much calmer you feel when you just do the things you need to do immediately.

Try it.  Like all habits, it might take a while to get into it, but once you do, like me, you will never want to go back.

The other benefit of completing small tasks right away is the sense of accomplishment you get which raises your vibration like I posted yesterday.   Things You Can Do To Raise Your Vibration

And since raising your vibration is what will help you create the life you want, that is an even more important reason to get things done.  :-)

  1. Oh, I so hear ya...I think I must have loved the adrenaline "shot" that came from that last minute push, until my adrenals said "enough already, enough" and pooped out on me. Now I realize why my mom organized her life the way she did. She had one of the most "do it now, get it done" attitudes I've ever encountered. Gee, wonder why I didn't listen then...and I am now!

    1. Jane,

Indeed! Get your work done, then you feel really good about yourself, then your mind is freed up to create more great stuff and you feel better and thus are higher in vibration and then you have more time.....so many positives that keep rippling out and making even more positives!!

  3. MamaRed,

I know! The good thing is that we ARE doing it now. And it is SUCH a relief!

  4. I think you wrote this just for me Kathy. My past has been to look at a task, determine how long it will take, and then wait until that amount of time before it needs to be done to start. Thanks for the encouragement to change the way I think.

    1. Barry,

I love it when it works out that way!

I think you will find, (just like I did) that when you do it this other way, you end up getting much more done and yet feeling like you have far more spare time.

      Thanks,

  5. The problem with procrastination is that it works!

I like the saying, "Procrastination is something best left for tomorrow." Gets me a chuckle.

    1. Brett,

I'm so glad you brought that up. I almost added that part to the post, actually. As with anything that we are doing that really isn't the very best for us, "it works" for us right now.

Like I said at the first part of the post, I said that and believed it for years and years. I reveled in it actually.

UNTIL......I started following what other successful people whom I wanted to emulate did.

Then, additionally, when I started to get things done, it changed everything. I would not go back there now.

  6. This is so true, Kathy. Especially the part about thinking about doing something taking as much energy as doing it. As an expert procrastinator, I can testify to how much better you feel if you just "get 'er done" because that's one less thing you have to remember to do.

  7. Kathy, I read a tip once about how to help stop procrastinating, that I have used very effectively. Commit to 60 seconds of the activity you are wanting to put off. Just 60 seconds. You can stop after one short minute. Normally (after I start and do my 60 seconds) I go ahead and finish!

    1. Arla,

Cool! Do whatever works for you. The main thing is to do the tasks or not but don't think about them. Either do them and get them done or forget about it until you can do them.

Since most people find it impossible to forget about them, it is best just to do them and if this 60 second thing works, great!

Thanks for sharing. It may help someone else, too.

  8. I SERIOUSLY need to work on this when it comes to the house. I'm find when it comes to work, but the house becomes such a mess because I don't want to deal with it.

    1. Amanda,

How I started applying this to house work years ago was to just do one small thing. If you are like the way I was back then, it was all or nothing. With this new approach, I started to clean not even one whole room but just one part of a room.

That was then. Now, because of the "do it now" way of living I have, the house really never gets dirty in the first place. :-) AND is seems to take almost nothing to do it. :-)
